The Mushroom Kingdom is getting a whole lot bigger. During a Nintendo Direct livestream on Monday, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri dropped a major announcement: a sequel to the blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie is officially on its way, complete with a star-studded cast and a cosmic new setting.
Chris Pratt is once again stepping into the red overalls to voice Mario, who this time is leaving the pipes behind for the stars. He’s joined by a host of returning favourites, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as the anxious Luigi, Jack Black as the scene-stealing Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
The sequel is also expanding its roster with some exciting new faces. Benny Safdie will voice Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., while Oscar winner Brie Larson enters the franchise as Princess Rosalina, the celestial guide first introduced in the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy.
The new trailer gives fans a glimpse of the high-flying adventure, which sees Mario, Luigi, and Peach travelling beyond the familiar borders of the Mushroom Kingdom and into outer space. The trio finds themselves confronting Bowser once again, this time with his son in tow, across a series of bizarre and beautiful planets.
Viewers are treated to a whirlwind tour of these new worlds—a volcanic landscape, a mysterious underwater realm, and a neon-drenched, gravity-defying futuristic city. The heroes aren’t alone in their quest; they team up with the ethereal Rosalina and the adorable, egg-laying Yoshi, who is true to form with his signature cry.
They’ll also face a new lineup of adversaries, including the fan-favourite dinosaur Birdo, as well as Wart and the Honey Queen, voiced by Luis Guzman and Issa Rae respectively.
Directed once again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to land in cinemas everywhere on April 1, courtesy of Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo.
