Jack White is setting the record straight after his recent remarks about Taylor Swift sparked intense reactions from her fanbase.
On Monday, March 9, the White Stripes frontman took to his Instagram Stories to address comments he made in a recent interview with The Guardian. In the original conversation, White had shared that he personally doesn’t find it compelling to write songs based on his own life experiences, making a passing reference to the trend of pop stars—what he called the “Taylor Swift way”—detailing public breakups in their music.
Almost immediately after the interview went viral, criticism began flooding in from Swift’s dedicated followers. In response, the six-time Grammy winner clarified that his words were never intended as a critique of Swift or any other artist, but rather a reflection of his own creative preferences.
Breaking down his perspective, White explained, “What I was trying to say in an interview I did about poetry and lyric writing, was that I don’t find it interesting at all for ME to write about MYSELF in my own lyric writing and poetry.” He added that for him personally, delving into his own life could become repetitive, both for himself as a writer and for listeners. Instead, he finds greater appeal in crafting stories around imaginary characters.
The musician was careful to emphasize that his approach is just one of many, and that every artist has to find what works for them. “Because I say I have a way of doing things doesn’t mean that I think that EVERYONE should do it the same way,” he wrote. “They should do what works for them, And they do, and it is obviously appealing to many people, and I’m glad to hear that.”
White also took the opportunity to reflect on the current media landscape, expressing frustration with how easily comments can be twisted in the digital age. He noted that the constant demand for “click bait and content” has made him increasingly wary of doing interviews, as even a small remark can be pulled out of context and used as “bait.”
