[10:08, 18/02/2026] 😎: The NFL offseason is officially underway, and the league is bracing for a flurry of activity. With a free-agent class brimming with talent and several teams holding significant salary-cap space, the stage is set for a wild period of roster reshaping.
One of the most intriguing names set to hit the market is Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne. After spending his entire career in Duval County, the former first-round pick is poised to become a coveted asset for any team looking to bolster its ground game.
Etienne heads into free agency on a high note. After a 2024 season plagued by injuries, he bounced back in a big way, proving his durability and playmaking ability. He was a key engine in the Jaguars’ run to an AFC South title, rushing for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns. This marked the third time in four years he has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, solidifying his status as a workhorse back when healthy.
What truly sets Etienne apart in this year’s class is his dual-threat capability. He isn’t just a runner; he’s a legitimate weapon in the passing game. Over the last four seasons, the only running backs to log over 30 catches and 250 receiving yards each year are Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley, and Etienne himself. In 2025, he added another 36 receptions for 292 yards and six scores through the air, proving his value on all three downs.
However, his future in Jacksonville is far from certain. The Jaguars have a host of other needs and critical free agents to prioritize, which could leave Etienne as the odd man out. If he hits the open market, interest is expected to be high. His electrifying style and proven production make him a potential difference-maker for any offense.
One team that stands out as a perfect fit is the Kansas City Chiefs. The AFC powerhouse is bracing for a challenging season, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes slated to miss significant time due to injury. While their Super Bowl window might be on hold until his return, the franchise is undoubtedly focused on building the strongest possible roster for when he does.
Etienne would be a massive upgrade for a Chiefs running game that was arguably the worst unit on the team last season. Kansas City’s ground attack averaged a paltry less than 4.0 yards per carry, and not a single back on the roster managed even 200 receiving yards. They finished the year ranked 24th in the league in rushing yards per game (106.6), a glaring weakness that contributed to their playoff absence.
Addressing the backfield has to be a top priority for Kansas City this offseason. Adding a player of Etienne’s caliber wouldn’t just provide an instant offensive spark; it would also weaken a fellow AFC contender by pulling talent away from a division rival. It’s a move that makes sense on every level.
