Apple is accelerating its artificial intelligence strategy, playing catch-up in a field led by rivals. According to recent reports, the company’s plans include a fundamental transformation of Siri and the development of a novel AI wearable.
Siri’s Major Transformation
Per a Bloomberg report, Apple intends to replace Siri’s current interface with a chatbot experience similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, codenamed “Campos.” This new Siri, reportedly powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, is slated for integration into iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems in updates this fall. More details are expected at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. This move follows the underwhelming reception of the Apple Intelligence features launched with the iPhone 16.
A New AI Wearable on the Horizon
Separately, The Information reports that Apple is developing a compact, AI-powered wearable device about the size of an AirTag. Tentatively planned for a 2027 launch, this circular, aluminum-and-glass “AI pin” would feature multiple cameras, microphones, a speaker, and wireless charging. It would be controlled primarily by the revamped Siri chatbot. The report cautions, however, that the project could face delays or cancellation.
This concept follows the high-profile failure of Humane’s Ai Pin, placing pressure on Apple’s execution. The success of such a device would hinge entirely on the fluidity and usefulness of the new Siri experience driving it.
A Crowded AI Hardware Landscape
Apple is not alone in exploring AI-centric hardware. OpenAI is reportedly working on a device with former Apple designer Jony Ive, while Meta and Google are focusing on AI-enabled smart glasses. Apple is also said to be developing other AI hardware, including smart glasses, augmented reality eyewear, sensor-enhanced AirPods, a security camera, and a long-rumored iPad-like home hub.
Whether Apple’s rumored AI pin becomes a standalone product or an iPhone accessory remains unclear. As the industry watches Humane’s struggles, the question is whether Apple can succeed where others have stumbled in making an AI wearable both practical and desirable.
