Organizers announced on Thursday that John Travolta’s first feature as a director, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, will make its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Cannes Premiere selection. The film, produced by Apple Original Films, is an adaptation of Travolta’s own 1997 illustrated book, which was inspired by his childhood memories and deep love for aviation. The festival has not yet released a specific premiere date.
Plot Overview
According to the festival’s synopsis, the story follows “young airplane enthusiast Jeff and his mother” as they embark on a one-way cross-country journey to Hollywood. “Between airline meals, charming flight attendants, unexpected stopovers, larger-than-life passengers, and a thrilling glimpse at first class, the journey unfolds in moments both magical and unexpected, charting the course for the boy’s future.”
Cast and Production
The film features newcomer Clark Shotwell as Jeff, with Kelly Eviston-Quinnett playing his mother. Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, and Olga Hoffmann appear as flight attendants. The movie is produced by Travolta’s JTP Films alongside Kids at Play, with Travolta, Jason Berger, and Amy Laslett serving as producers.
The Cannes premiere will take place at the Debussy Theatre with Travolta in attendance, ahead of the film’s global release on Apple TV on May 29.
Background of the Book
Travolta originally created the book for his son. Its summary reads: “When his actress mother decides to move to Hollywood, Jeff, an eight-year-old boy who dreams of flying in a plane, begins his journey with connecting flights, airline food, stopovers, and time spent in first class.”
Travolta’s Lifelong Passion for Aviation
The Cannes festival highlighted that Travolta has long been passionate about planes and flying. As a child, he watched aircraft take off from La Guardia Airport near his home. He began flying at age 15 and earned his first pilot’s license at 22. He is certified to fly Boeing 707s, 737s, and 747s, as well as Bombardier’s Global Express, and was the first private pilot to fly an Airbus A380. With over 9,000 flight hours logged, he has owned several aircraft and even piloted planes in two films: Look Who’s Talking (1989) and Broken Arrow (1996).
A Cannes Regular
Travolta has previously brought three films to the Cannes Croisette: Pulp Fiction (1994) and She’s So Lovely (1997) in competition, and Primary Colors (1998) out of competition. The festival noted that the 72-year-old actor is a Palme d’Or winner, two-time Academy Award nominee, and three-time Golden Globe and Emmy winner, describing him as “an iconic figure in pop culture” thanks to classics like Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease (1978), Blow Out (1981), and Hairspray (2007).
79th Cannes Film Festival Opening
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival will open on May 12 with Pierre Salvadori’s La Vénus électrique, a period piece set in the 1920s. The film will premiere at the Grand Théâtre Lumière following an opening ceremony hosted by actress Eye Haïdara.
